I really do not know what James Thurber’s thinking was when he first wrote or stated those words but I for one would interpret it to have applied to the large numbers of domestic violence cases that have always existed. Since men have always been granted power over women by the Churches, there has always been a real danger to the women that will and are still mistreated by them.
Marriage itself actually leads to the longevity of mankind under normal circumstances. Statistics show that people who marry live longer than those that do not, when a spouse is not being abused. Primarily because people who are married eat healthier and take better care of themselves than what single people do. Also the emotional support in times of need lessen the stress on the married.
As men have learned over the years that women are not their property but rather their equals, laws have been put into place to better protect women. Unfortunately not all men have learned the lesson yet. Women still are being abused in large numbers and domestic violence cases are still the most dangerous situations that cops enter when called in to protect the victims.
The unfortunate thing about the domestic laws is that not a lot can be done when threats or stalking are part of the scenario. Until the crime, or in some cases murder, is actually committed law enforcement hands are tied by current law. Restraining orders mean nothing to men that are determined to believe when they marry that women become their property and therefore their right to own and control. As long as we keep fighting, “the same old same old” we as women will never be able to move ahead on granting a safer existence to all of our sisters.
Although the Mormon Church has been said to have contributed the most money that led to preventing equal rights from the 1920’s to 1971 the same effort has been made on the part of most of the religions. Certainly threats of losing their children as well as excommunication over the years played a role in women staying in abusive situations.
The Evangelical and fundamentalist are as much at fault in the endeavor to keep women subservient to men, as the established religions are. the Baptist Church has run programs for years in how to teach women to be better subservient wives and certainly do not stand alone in doing so. The Tea Party only interest is in bringing back the power of the right-wing cause as well as the large amounts of special interests’ cash that is going into supporting the candidates.
The thinking that white men were/are superior in both ability and intellect to women, came out of the mentality taught to men years ago by both their fathers and the Churches. Although, it has always been the churches teaching that men are to respect their wives it is highly naive of them to think that when men’s ego and needs are to be served by women that many will not abuse women.
Women were/are indeed treated as these men’s property and it is their duty to protect and to control them as the man of the house. Women were and are still considered misguided, temptresses and weak with their real value being to produce off-spring, in the homes where these limited insights are still the law. To them to change to a more progressive way of thinking means that they risk losing both power and control.
In recent years there has been a return to the idea that women belong in the home and men belong in the working force earning the income for the home. This idea has become prevalent again in the teaching of many of the Churches to counter act the misguided idea of what many still feel today, is feminism philosophy.
The reasoning, if any can call it reasoning, is that when women become more financially secure they have less of a reason to respect the man they marry as well as the divorce rates increase. Also women are taking all the jobs that they feel that white men are entitled to.
It is hard for any of us that deal in compassion and common sense to think that marriage at all cost to half of the population, mainly women, is some how preferable than remaining single or divorce. If one would take a look at the idea they in truth are saying a woman who is trapped by finances will not file for divorce. The Redneck philosophy sadly, is alive and well in today’s thinking.
This is an election year for those of you who do not care about politics. The above philosophy is being taught and in many cases brainwashed into the brains of young girls and boys. Not only in the summer camps but also in the homes and churches. The main base of the right-wing conservatives exist in the Republican party but there are a few amongst the Democrats as well.
The best way to know if a candidate running for office is right-wing conservatives or not is to check out their beliefs when it comes to pro-choice or pro-life. Unfortunately so much more of the rights of women have been thrown into the pro-life/pro-choice bill that it has never been just about abortion. The educated and education is being degraded by them as well and is at stake as well as it guarantees all genders and races constitutional rights to freedom of choice and equality.
Before you vote know who you are voting for as it is your own responsibility to know and to do so. The new hate word still includes liberal but they also have added the word progressive as if it too is a grievous error. God help all of us to finally be able to move ahead on no one being a second class citizen but instead everyone being equal. It is truly sad that we are still having to fight that simple fact. Be AWARE when you vote and vote your rights this election year.
(I offer further explanation of my own interpretation of the meaning of, “the most dangerous food is wedding cake,” in a post written later, this week to be exact. It is entitled “Setting Standards In Our Life.” I hope it further clarifies things. Thanks)
